Welcome to Lawler's Section of Lit/Film!
Asking, "what's the point?" is always a good thing (believe me -- I've been trying to potty train my son this summer). And I think it's particularly a good thing for learning environments, so this is where we'll start the year in Literature and Film.
The questions below are the ones I'll pass out in class on Thursday. For Friday (August 30th) choose one question to reflect on and answer it in as much detail as possible. Try your best to remove yourself from a school context; don't think in terms of what "Literature and Film" will do for your transcript, diploma or college prospects. Instead, think of how this course may benefit you from the perspective of thinking, reading, writing, speaking, listening, or something else. In short, think in terms of the life benefits of studying Literature and Film.
Here are the questions, but make sure you consult the handout from Thursday -- there are some helpful comments there.
Why study literature and film?
What makes a work of literature great? What makes a film great?
What kind of an impact do dominant forms of art have on consumers and society?
What does it mean to be visually literate?
Be ready to share and submit your well-developed and detailed response to one of these on Friday, 8/30. Typed and double-spaced, please. I hope you all have a great year!
